If you are looking for something new and fun to watch, then I could have a show for you. If you like sci-fi, action, comedy, romance, drama then Final Space could be the show that you’ve been searching for, available to watch on Netflix and with the 3rd season recently becoming available for streaming on Netflix U.S and coming to the U.K later this year. Final Space is an animated action sci-fi comedy that follows the crew of unlikely friends onboard The Galaxy One, who come together to save the universe from The Lord Commander and his plans for something called ‘Final Space’ where the name of the show is derived from. The series was created by actor, writer and comedian Olan Rogers in 2010 on his Youtube channel. The series only had 3 episodes and was originally called Gary space, the animation was… well… definitely not studio quality but the idea was definitely there. More of a concept than an idea; it was pretty basic but still entertaining. Skip ahead 6 years to 2016 and BOOM! A pilot was made and posted to Youtube. The pilot was a leap above the original in quality and had more in common with the show we know now than the original 3 episode series. The pilot got picked up leading to it premiering on TBS 2 years later on February 26, 2018 and has gone on to Netflix and Adult Swim, with the 3rd season coming to UK Netflix later this year. You’re gonna wanna watch this binge-worthy rewatchable series, with loads of hidden jokes, quotes and 80’s pop culture movie references you’ll catch with every watch.
Why should you watch Final Space?
The Story and characters
The story is simple: stop the bad guy and save the universe, but it’s everything in between and how the characters are developed that make this show so entertaining. The characters and the relationship between them is interesting because they shouldn’t work together, but a common enemy brings them together despite their differences. Each character is unique, yet relatable. Everyone goes through their own struggles that they must overcome, that leave us wondering where to turn and so do they. Every character is trying to fit in and figure out their roles to play, fix or escape from something in their past or present, events that leave them questioning who they are, who they can trust and what to believe. I’m sure as you watch this show you’ll probably find someone or something that you can relate to in some weird Sci-fi kinda way.
The voice acting and animation
There is an impressive cast voiced by names such as David Tennant ( Doctor Who), Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Keith David (Pitch Black), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Jane Lynch (Glee), Gina Torres (Suits), Caleb Mclaughlin (Stranger Things). The animation is fantastic. Every scene is drawn beautifully and made to pop with bright and vibrant colours that bring the planets and ships to life.
The soundtrack
The soundtrack is great. The music in Final Space is composed by Shelby Merry and her music always fits the scene perfectly. In serious and dramatic scenes the music will let you feel the intensity of the situation. In funny scenes the music playing will have an 80s feel to it but where the music I think really comes into its own is in the emotional scenes. Honestly the music from those scenes has left a mark on me even after watching the series. I find myself listening to the music on its own and I still get the same feelings I did when I first heard it in the series. “When the night is long” and “Good enough for me” are the two songs that stuck with me.
My reason for watching Final Space
I love Sci-Fi, I think the show is hilarious and I love the characters, especially Gary, the main protagonist who is voiced by the show’s creator and writer Olan Rogers. Olan has an amazing gift for telling funny stories, so I’d also suggest you check out his YouTube channel if you haven’t already. Olan takes the most normal situations and turns them into some of the most hilarious stories, and I think that’s why I love final space so much, because the creator takes things we can all relate to and makes an amazing story out of it. The show has become a default for me. I put it on when I’m feeling low or if I’m not sure what to watch. Gary makes the whole show for me with his quotable lines like “I will fail…upwards” and his positive goofy child-like attitude towards everything. Gary is not the smartest or strongest character in the group and he recognizes that, so he doesn’t always feel good enough or scared he might fail and let those around him down but even though he screws up a lot… Like a lot, but he still continues to do his best to do what he feels is right even if he falls short sometimes and he’s not always understood. That’s what makes him my favourite character, because we all have those Gary moments in life where we feel misunderstood or fail, but just remember if you do fail, “fail..upwards”.
